Last thing first and old news after...

I finally got to meet Dave of Criminy Jickets, in person. Tempted by the scent of wholesale-priced Peace Fleece, and my offer to put together a group order, he was finally lured into the open (well, actually the warmth of a favourite coffee shop), to pick up his yarn. Leanne of To Knit is Divine came to get her yarn too, and to add to the Ottawa knit-blogger fest Sarah of The Fish Knits took advantage of our rendezvous to drop off Dave's and Leanne's shares of the Knit Picks group order that she had organized. Fortunately I had brought Youngest Child with me and she happily acted as photographer, snapping a pic with every camera available. This is the one I got. Dave and Leanne may have better ones. I think Sarah had camnesia. Only time will tell.

I assure you that Dave was only following Youngest Child's instructions to look serious, while the rest of us just couldn't manage it. Dave is a sweetheart and gifted both Sarah and me with scrumptious yarn as a token of appreciation for our mad group ordering skillz.

Marieke's Hat, and other stories

| | Comments (4)
When last I blogged I was uncertain about the commissioned earflap hat. I took it to work, showed it to everyone and asked if they thought a 16-year old girl would like it, and everyone said, "I'd wear it." But as none of my co-workers are even close to being 16, that was not necessarily encouraging.

The following Saturday was our annual family latke feast so I took the hat along to show to my brother, SIL, and nephew who are friends and neighbours to Marieke, the intended victim recipient. They unanimously agreed that she would like it. Phew! I felt much better after that and then Marieke's mom, the very talented Stephanie, left me a very nice comment about the hat too.  I arranged to drop it off at their house on the Monday evening, conveniently right after show-and-tell at our December knitting guild meeting.

Monday morning found me sewing in ends and adding the final embellishments.

The drop off went without serious incident, although there was some quick scrambling to hide the package in the front hall when Marieke unexpectedly turned up in the adjacent kitchen. I left, eagerly anticipating Christmas day (still 2 weeks away) and Marieke's reaction. Well, I didn't have to wait that long because Stephanie just couldn't wait to give her the hat, so two days later I was informed by email that Marieke's initial reaction was,"What a kickass hat!". It was then worn constantly, including all day at school until some unappreciative history teacher made her take it off. Definitely a success.

A-felting we will go

Last Thursday I began teaching a 4-session class in knitting and felting bowls. To prepare, I made some before and after samples to show at the first class.

These were all knitted and felted last Friday, Saturday, Sunday.

A Variety of Bowls

Plus, there were unfelted samples of three of these for comparison. Rather than make this entry even more picture-heavy, you can see them all in my All About Felting photoset.

This weekend, including today, I made a few more things,

More felty goodness

and felted the unfelted samples from the week before.

Previously unfelted samples

Again, there are before and after shots in the All About Felting photoset.

Everything from the first batch and the white bowl were completely felted in my good old top-loading washer. The bobble bowl, coffee cup cozy and three sample bowls got tossed in with laundry and weren't completely felted so I finished them up the old-fashioned way.

The Tools

It was fun, and with help of a few found-around-the-kitchen-and-bathroom tools and shaping aids they turned out great. You should try it, but I'm warning you, it can be totally addicting. And later there will be embellishing!

Shaping Aids

For those who don't get the title, perhaps because you are too young to remember Donovan's top-40 single from July 1967, watch this so you can sing along. But I'm warning you, it has a tendency to get stuck in your head.

So. Remember these mittens from back in March?

Well, a couple of months later the ordered yarn (for the missing mitten) arrived, but it was Spring by then and so the mitten didn't get knit, but I did write the pattern down since I figured it would probably not get knit until Fall. And here we are and now it is Fall, and so I printed out the pattern and knit a mitten.

First there is a mitten...

Begin Time Travel Sequence

With our recent upgrade (Thanks son!) to MT4, I thought that I would change the blog style. What do you think? And then I had this great idea which I swear I didn't get from Dave Daniels.

My second anniversary of blogging is also approaching. October 3, 2005 was the day I created my first entry in Blogger. There was no first anniversary of blogging as it fell in the dark age between Blogger and Movable Type.
Now as it happens, I had 12 old entries on Blogger and there are 12 days until my blogiversary. So, I am going to let you all travel back in time with me by publishing one of those old entries each day for the next 12 days. Because I wanted to keep the original publication dates you will need to go to the archives to find them (at the bottom). Don't worry though. It won't be only old news on the blog. I'll keep you posted on the current stuff as well. Like this:

P9220679 It's a button-up Corrugaiter! (Click to see it bigger on Flickr, but don't squint. There is a close-up of the button below.)

Get it? CorruGAITER? As in neck gaiter? HAHAHAHAHA. I crack me up. And ya gotta love Google for turning up these priceless links.
