The Big Snow, More Hats, AND Criminy Jickets!

| | Comments (6)
Last thing first and old news after...

I finally got to meet Dave of Criminy Jickets, in person. Tempted by the scent of wholesale-priced Peace Fleece, and my offer to put together a group order, he was finally lured into the open (well, actually the warmth of a favourite coffee shop), to pick up his yarn. Leanne of To Knit is Divine came to get her yarn too, and to add to the Ottawa knit-blogger fest Sarah of The Fish Knits took advantage of our rendezvous to drop off Dave's and Leanne's shares of the Knit Picks group order that she had organized. Fortunately I had brought Youngest Child with me and she happily acted as photographer, snapping a pic with every camera available. This is the one I got. Dave and Leanne may have better ones. I think Sarah had camnesia. Only time will tell.

I assure you that Dave was only following Youngest Child's instructions to look serious, while the rest of us just couldn't manage it. Dave is a sweetheart and gifted both Sarah and me with scrumptious yarn as a token of appreciation for our mad group ordering skillz.

That's two skeins of Claudia Hand Painted Yarn (Blue Terra Cotta). I love it. Thanks Dave!

Now, back to the irregularly scheduled blog posting...

On December 16, we had a big snowstorm. You can see my whole photoset here.

15 inches = 38 cm, and some of it was a little deeper All done

Two comments of note from my son in Beijing:

[Ottawa is] ten billion times prettier than beijing" and  "man the sky in ottawa is so blue..."

After the big snow I decided to knit The Orange Hat, the yarn for which was purchased waaay back, just before school started.

PC170947

It was worked from the top down (just to try something different), using one strand of the mostly-wool sock yarn and one strand of the mostly-acrylic-with-a-little-mohair fluffy yarn, on 3.5 mm (?) needles. The bottom part was knit in garter stitch (on 90% of the stitches) with the Brazilia and the sock yarn and then the edge was finished off with applied i-cord. Finally, to avoid the dreaded Forehead Itchies, the bottom part was lined with leftover 100% merino superwash sock yarn.

She likes it!

Last, but not least, I present to you The Ultimate Earflap Hat, cheerfully modeled by Giant Ball 'o' Top.

This hat is for my son. Because he is so far away and I miss him a lot, it is made out of one strand of Handmaiden 4-ply cashmere and one strand of Misti 4-ply Alpaca (worsted weight), worked stranded, not together. Please visit the photoset here to see (many) more pictures. The ear flaps are a double layer of concave garter stitch Alpaca goodness. The inside of the brim is lined with straight cashmere. No Forehead Itchies here! In addition to being incredibly soft, it is also very light, weighing in at a mere 90 grams (3.2 ounces).

Now if I just get it in the mail soon, he should have it before Spring.

You did get a ton of snow. May the hat keep your son warm and give him the feeling of a little bit of home.

Whoa! ordering Peace Fleece **wholesale** now THAT'S the way to do it... I wish more folks down here would fall in love with that yarn as much as I have... seriously, it may just be my all time favourite.
The orange hat is great fun and looks good on her!
